Australia are all set to face their next assignment as they gear up to take on South Africa. With the ODI World Cup 2023 looming around the corner, their white-ball assignment against the Proteas will do them a world of good. It is worth noting that they face South Africa in three T20Is and five ODIs, with the first T20I starting on Wednesday, August 30.
With the Aussies announcing the squad for the multi-format series, Spencer Johnson was included in the side for the three-match T20I series as well. At 27 years old, Johnson is yet to play his first game in international cricket, and as the opportunity came close, veteran batter Travis Head came forward to heap massive praise on the pacer.
Despite the Australian team having many names in their lineup, Head opined that he was most excited to see what Johnson has in store for them in the upcoming series. Furthermore, he added that the pacer could be someone with a similar impact to that of Mitchell Starc in the future as well.
"He’s someone who has played really well over the last couple of months, and (his Australian call-up) is something that has probably come a little bit quicker than expected," Head was quoted as saying by FoxSports.
"He’s gone through a bit of injury stuff, but he’s someone who bowls at high speed and can swing the ball. He’s done it really well at tournaments over the last couple of months," the southpaw added.
He can be that guy for us at the top of the bowling innings: Head
Furthermore, Travis Head also stated that Spencer Johnson can be a big player for Australia in the future with the amount of talent he has. He also opined that it would be nice to see him get some international experience as well.
"His body is good, he’s bowling fast, and hopefully he can be that guy for us at the top of the bowling innings, someone similar to Starcy and a matchwinner taking wickets. It would be nice to see him get international experience, have a crack at it, and see where he matches up," Head concluded.
