The Indian team announced their squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand and Bangladesh after the conclusion of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Australia on Monday. The selectors decided to rest key senior players like Virat Kohli, skipper Rohit Sharma and his opening partner KL Rahul while handing national call-ups to Kuldeep Sen and Rajat Patidar. But according to former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer, Ravi Bishnoi's exclusion from the squads was a bit puzzling.

While the selectors decided to give the young Indian tearaway pacer Umran Malik another opportunity at the highest level, they opted for Shahbaz Ahmed and Washington Sundar instead of Ravi Bishnoi in the limited-overs format. Bishnoi, who impressed in India's tour of the West Indies before the Asia Cup, was in contention of making the squad only to be left out to the surprise of Wasim Jaffer.

The only surprise for me was the exclusion of Ravi Bishnoi: Wasim Jaffer

Although Jaffer lauded India's bench strength as they rolled out a strong squad for the New Zealand white-ball tour, which is to be followed by an ODI and Test series in Bangladesh, he was not amused by the omission of the young Indian leggie.

"It is a very good squad. India have got so many options and put out a competitive team despite resting the big names. It goes on to show the bench strength and the talent the Indian team posses. The only surprise for me was the exclusion of Ravi Bishnoi from the white-ball squads. It is a bit puzzling for me how Ravi Bishnoi become so out of favor suddenly?" said Jaffer on BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti show on CricTracker.

Ravi Bishnoi, the 22-year-old leggie from Rajasthan has had a breakthrough year for the national side in 2022. He has featured in ten T20Is for the Men in Blues, scalping 16 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.08. He even impressed in India's narrow loss to arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup earlier this year. The youngster posted an Instagram story after his controversial omission, reading, "Comeback is always stronger than setback."
