MS Dhoni, aged 45, did not feature in a single match during IPL 2026 as multiple injury concerns kept him sidelined throughout the season. The Chennai Super Kings captain's absence marked a significant moment in his IPL career, with the franchise finishing eighth in the ten-team standings. Despite his non-playing status, Dhoni remained involved with the team during the campaign.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has indicated that the veteran wicketkeeper-batter may return to action for the franchise in the upcoming season. Speaking about Dhoni's future, Viswanathan acknowledged that the decision ultimately rests with the player himself.

"It's a question you need to ask him. I also have to ask him. He informs us of his decision when he arrives in Chennai. I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there. He is still a player, you know," Viswanathan said as quoted by India Today.

Former CSK head coach Stephen Fleming defended Dhoni's non-playing role during IPL 2026 and highlighted his continued value to the franchise. Fleming emphasised that Dhoni's presence in the team environment provided crucial support to younger players and contributed to team continuity.

"MS has been around a lot this year, which has been really important for the team, for a lot of the young players, and for continuity. So, he's been a big part of it. He hasn't played, but he's still had a big influence on the team," said Fleming.

Suresh Raina urges Dhoni to return for IPL 2027

Suresh Raina, the former CSK batter, has urged Dhoni to make a comeback for IPL 2027. Raina spoke about his conversation with Dhoni following the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season, where he encouraged the veteran to return to competitive cricket.

"I told him you have given IPL 2026 a missed call. It won't count. You have to come back next year," Raina said.

Raina remained optimistic about Dhoni's prospects, noting that the player's response suggested a willingness to consider a return. He also highlighted the team's improving form and the fans' desire to see Dhoni back in action.

"It's his personal call. I think he is positive. The team is also gelling well again. Fans also want him to come. He said, 'Let me see.' If he says let me see, there's a chance he will work hard, and play again," he said.

Sanju Samson, who joined CSK from Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2026, played all 14 matches for the franchise and accumulated 477 runs during the season. The wicketkeeper-batter's consistent performances provided stability as CSK navigated a challenging campaign that saw them finish outside the playoff positions for a third consecutive year.
