Shubman Gill was dropped from the T20I side just ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, which India went on to win under Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy. The Punjab batter was India's vice-captain in the format during their triumphant Asia Cup campaign last year. However, scoring just 291 runs in 15 T20Is at an average of 24.25 in 2025, he was snubbed.

Shubman took the setback in his stride and continued improving his game in the shortest format. He needed a big IPL season with the bat this year to get back into contention, and he has done that, amassing 722 runs in 15 innings at a strike rate of 163.72.

Ahead of the Gujarat Titans' clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, Shubman said that his focus is on improving as a batter across all formats. He also mentioned that he would be happy if he were recalled to India's T20 setup.

“I’d be happy to play if I get picked for the T20 team. Honestly, I want to keep working on my game. I want to keep getting better as a T20 batsman, as an ODI batsman, as a Test batsman. You know, cricket is such a game that you can never really get perfect, but obviously, you can strive for it, and that’s what I try to do," Shubman was quoted as saying by News18.

India's Test and ODI skipper, Shubman, said that he is particularly focused on his preparation as it helps him to stay mentally fresh.

“I think preparation is what keeps me mentally fresh, knowing what I need to do the next week, next couple of weeks or in the next series or next tournament, and preparing for that. It’s about knowing the things that are in my control or knowing the things that I need to do well to be able to succeed and what we need to do well as a team to be able to succeed is what I think keeps me mentally fit," Shubman concluded.
