'If I were in the Indian dressing room' - Dinesh Karthik's take on playing XI after worrisome defeat in IND vs WI 2nd T20I

India suffered a significant defeat in the second T20I against West Indies at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday, October 9, 2026. West Indies successfully chased down India's total of 249 for five wickets, winning with six wickets and nine balls to spare to level the five-match series at one win each with three games remaining.
Dinesh Karthik, the former India wicketkeeper-batter, offered his perspective on whether India should alter their playing eleven for the upcoming third T20I scheduled for Sunday, October 11, 2026, in Ranchi. Speaking after the match, Karthik analysed the team's composition and the available options for potential changes, focusing on the constraints of India's current bowling setup.
"Will they look at an extra pacer if they feel it is required? So maybe Prince in for one of the spinners. At the same time, genuinely, if I were in the Indian dressing room, I would not change it up too much." Karthik said on Cricbuzz.
"I think they are playing a strong XI. Obviously, if you want to play Nitish Kumar Reddy, I don't see how they can fit in anybody. Unless you are resting somebody and the communication is very clear, I don't see why you should change based on this game," he added.
Bowling combination and squad flexibility concerns
Karthik's assessment highlighted the structural challenges India faces when considering squad adjustments. India's bowling combination currently features only two frontline pacers alongside three all-rounders, and one frontline spinner, a configuration that significantly limits flexibility when exploring additional personnel options. This balance has proven effective overall, yet the loss in Ranchi prompted questions about potential tactical modifications.

The availability of players like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prince Yadav gives captain Shreyas Iyer options to explore for the remaining matches. However, Karthik suggested that fitting them into the XI without removing an existing player presents a considerable challenge. His stance reflected confidence in the squad's overall balance and composition despite the defeat, indicating that wholesale changes were unnecessary based on a single loss in the series.
