After being an integral part of Peshawar Zalmi’s success since the inaugural season of the Pakistan Super League, Daren Sammy decided to step down as the Head Coach of the team in the year 2021. Former England international James Foster was appointed to take over and despite guiding the team to the playoffs, the Zalmi officials took the hard call and terminated Foster and have now again appointed Sammy.
Now, being a member of the side since the initial days, the two-time T20 world cup winner was appointed as the captain in 2017 when Shahid Afridi resigned from the post. He was very good with his leadership skills as he took Zalmi to three successive finals including a win in 2017 over Quetta Gladiators.
Even after being successful at the helm, Zalmi shuffled their captain in the middle of the season in 2020 and replaced him with Wahab Riaz. Following that, he was appointed as the Head Coach before he eventually left the side in 2021.
Now, announcing his return to PSL, Sammy shared a picture on his Twitter account with the caption ‘I’m back’.
Sammy’s history as Head Coach
Sammy will be bringing a rich vein of coaching experience to Zalmi. He was appointed as the Head Coach of the St. Lucia Kings in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and in the very last season, he guided the Kings to the playoffs of the competition where the team lost to Jamaica Tallawahs by 33 runs in the Eliminator.
Being part of Peshawar’s coaching group, Sammy helped the team qualify for the finals in the year 2021 but lost to Multan Sultan in the finals. Now, with captain Wahab Riaz by his side, he would aim to help Zalmi win their second PSL title in history.
In the meantime, the PSL authorities have announced that the new season will begin on September 9, 2023, and the final will be played on March 19, 2023.
