‘I’m someone who likes continuity’ - Rahul Dravid shares experience of working with multiple captains as India head coach

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India head coach came to an end after the T20 World Cup 2024. There was an opportunity for him to renew it, especially when captain Rohit Sharma endorsed, but the former cricketer decided not to after spending almost three years with the team. In these years, the 51-year-old has seen a lot of success but a few heartbreaks as well, which includes losing to England in the T20 World Cup 2022 and to Australia in the finals of World Test Championship 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023.

Meanwhile, Dravid has also seen a new phenomenon in world cricket, named workload management. A thing that didn’t exist before the COVID-19 pandemic was in full swing during Dravid’s era as head coach. A lot of senior cricketers took breaks from time to time, which didn’t hurt the team much, but it disrupted the process.

“We really had to manage their workloads through all the three different formats. There were a few injuries, and it led to me working with something like 5–6 captains in the first 8–10 months of me being here. It was definitely something that I hadn’t envisaged,” Dravid was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

The former cricketer noted that he had not seen something like that and shared his experience of working with multiple captains during the first few months. Dravid added that he prefers continuity, as otherwise it creates a lot of instability and doesn’t create a good environment.

“I’m someone who actually likes continuity and don’t like to chop and change too many things because I believe that creates a lot of instability and doesn’t create a very good environment. I feel that I am a part of the team whose responsibility is to create the right professional, safe, secure environment that doesn’t really have a fear of failure as such but is challenging enough to push people. That has always been my endeavour,” he added.

As things stand, the Indore-born will be taking a break from coaching, but might return during IPL. However, he hasn’t been approached by any franchise as of now.
