Imran Khan arrested again, sentenced to three years imprisonment

Legendary Pakistani cricketer and former Prime Minister of the country, Imran Khan, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment on charges of corruption on Saturday, August 5. The Islamabad trial court also barred Imran from participating in active politics for five years. This comes as a huge blow for the man who inspirationally led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup in Australia.

Imran, who will turn 71 in October, had been sentenced for not declaring the proceeds of state gifts to the Election Commission of Pakistan. The former all-rounder's political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of the country.

This is not the first time that Imran has been arrested. Earlier this year, in May, Imran was arrested after being "accused of commission of the offence of corruption and corrupt practices" under a section of the National Accountability Ordinance. The Supreme Court ordered that the former cricketer should be released after a couple of days. There have been a few more attempts to arrest Imran from his house, but those have been foiled by his supporters.

The former Pakistan pacer has openly stated on several occasions that he runs the risk of being imprisoned in interviews and on social media. Along with the three years imprisonment, Imran has also been fined PKR 100,000.

Imran Khan is a bonafide legend in the game of cricket. He had a surreal fan following, not only because of his excellent performances on the field but also his charismatic personality that rubbed off on his fellow players.

In his career, which spanned over two decades, Imran played 88 Test matches, scoring 3807 runs at an average of 37.69, with 18 fifties and six hundreds. With the ball, Imran picked up 362 wickets at 22.81. The Lahore-born cricketer also played 175 ODIs and scored 3709 runs at an average of 33.41 with 19 fifties and a solitary hundred. He also contributed with the ball, picking 182 wickets at an average of 26.62.
