  • India vs England, Day 4, 2nd Test 2024 Scorecard

Despite entering the match with a depleted squad due to the absence of key players, India rebounded impressively after their unexpected loss in Hyderabad a week ago. The victory over England's Bazballers was secured with a comfortable margin. Although England mounted a spirited effort, their frequent loss of wickets prevented them from getting dangerously close. Nevertheless, they managed to achieve the second-highest fourth-innings total by a visiting team in India, adding a noteworthy chapter to the match after falling 106 runs short of the target.

Here are the India vs England 2nd Test highlights of the Day 4:

1. Rohit Sharma defies reflex arcs to dismiss Ollie pope

In the 29th over, Ravichandran Ashwin delivered a just-short-of-length ball targeting the off stump. Ollie Pope attempted a forceful back-foot shot, but only managed a thick outside edge towards first slip, where captain Rohit Sharma was stationed. Despite the ball flying past him, Rohit showcased remarkable reflexes, moving his hands in sync with the ball's trajectory and securing a sharp catch on his left side. Television replays later revealed that Rohit completed the catch within a mere 0.45 seconds of Pope's edge, showcasing his agility and alertness on the field.

2. Shreyas Iyer runs Ben Stokes out of the game

In a decisive moment, Shreyas Iyer's fielding brilliance tilted the match in India's favour. His stunning effort led to the dismissal of Ben Stokes, a game-changer in his own right. Ashwin delivered a fuller ball on the middle stump, inducing a thick inside edge that raced towards the square leg. Stokes, known for his game-altering abilities, showed a hint of complacency in his run. Sensing an opportunity, Iyer charged in from mid-wicket, executing a seamless one-handed pickup and throw that shattered the stumps with Stokes narrowly short. This significant moment swung the momentum firmly towards India's side.

3. Fired up Ashwin gets into verbal spat with Bairstow

During a tense moment before lunch, Ravichandran Ashwin and Jonny Bairstow engaged in a heated verbal spat. The exchange occurred following pacer Jasprit Bumrah's LBW dismissal of Bairstow, initially given out by the on-field umpire. Bairstow chose to review, with the DRS confirming his dismissal. As Bairstow headed back, Ashwin unleashed an animated celebration, confronting him aggressively. Bairstow responded with a few choice words of his own.

4. Tom Hartley survives Ashwin scare

Ace off-spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin's crafty move over the wicket left Hartley contemplating a reverse sweep. However, it was the deceptive carrom ball that found its mark, striking Hartley's left arm and popping up to slip. The impact seemed marginal on the off stump, suggesting it would clip it. Initially, the umpire, perceiving a glove touch, raised his finger, but the subsequent ball-tracking revealed an umpire's call for LBW, leaning towards 'not out'.

India contested, insisting the on-field decision favoured them. The umpire clarified that the out decision pertained to the catch, not the LBW. This DRS dilemma added a curious twist to the game, thereby reversing the on-field catch decision while upholding the umpire's call for LBW.
