IND vs ENG: Joe Root breaks Sachin Tendulkar's 11-year-old record

Star England batter Joe Root entered record books during Day 1 of the first Test against India on Thursday, January 25 as he became the leading run scorer in India vs England Test history. The 33-year-old left behind the legendary India batter Sachin Tendulkar during his brief innings of 29 (60) on Day 1 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Notably, ahead of the Test, Root was just ten runs away from surpassing Tendulkar, who sat on top of the list with 2535 runs to his name from 53 innings at an average of 51.73. The former England captain has now taken the top spot with 2555 runs to his name from just 46 innings at an average of 62.31 with nine hundreds and ten fifties.

Furthermore, the Yorkshire-born batter also levelled the record for most runs against India in Tests joining legendary Australia captain Ricky Ponting who also has 2555 runs to his name from 51 innings. Root has an even batter record against India in England having 1574 runs from 15 matches at an average of 74.95 with seven hundreds to his name.

His best performance in a series also came against India during the 2021-22 Pataudi Trophy where he amassed 737 runs from nine innings at a phenomenal average of 105.28 with four hundreds to his name.

Meanwhile, England were put on the backfoot on Day 1 of the Test as they got bundled out for 246 with captain Ben Stokes top-scoring with 70 (88). For India, Ravichandran Ashwin (3/68) and Ravindra Jadeja (3/88) were the pick of the bowlers for India while Axar Patel (2/33) and Jasprit Bumrah (2/28) also picked two wickets.

In reply, India got off to a great start in their first innings with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (76* off 70) and Rohit Sharma (24 off 27) adding 80 runs for the first wicket off 74 balls. Captain Rohit got holed out trying to go big against Jack Leach and got caught by his England counterpart Stokes at mid-off. Following his dismissal, Shubman Gill (14* off 43) joined Jaiswal at the crease and took India to stumps at 119/1 trailing by 127 runs.
