India's young batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal added a new feather to his cap on Saturday, February 24, becoming the fifth Indian in Test history to score 600 or more runs in a series. He accomplished the feat on Day 2 of the ongoing fourth Test of the five-match series against England at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, where India are attempting to seal the series.

The left-handed batter, who made his India debut in July 2023 during the West Indies tour, achieved the feat in just his seventh innings after taking a single off Shoaib Bashir's bowling to reach 55 not out. Nevertheless, after smashing eight boundaries and one maximum, the 22-year-old was bowled out by Bashir for 73 runs off 117 balls.

Moreover, Jaiswal, hailing from Bhadohi, Uttar Pradesh, smacked two double centuries in the second and third Tests against Ben Stokes and Co. in Vizag and Rajkot, respectively to help his side take a 2-1 lead. The opening batter has so far accumulated a total of 618 runs in seven innings at an average of 103 and a strike rate of 78.32.

Jaiswal joins Gavaskar, Dravid in the elite list

With this new mark, Yashasvi Jaiswal joined the elite list which includes the likes of Indian batting legends Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli, Rahul Dravid as well as Dilip Sardesai to score more than 600 runs in a Test series. Gavaskar, Kohli, and Dravid had scored 600-plus runs in a Test series twice in their careers while Sardesai accomplished this feat in the series in the West Indies in 1970–71.

In the same series, Gavaskar set a record for the most runs by an Indian batter in a Test series, scoring 774 runs, including four centuries, and three half-centuries at an average of 154.8. Moreover, the 'Little Master' is also unique in that he is the only Indian to have amassed more than 700 runs in a Test series twice.

In addition, Australian batting icon Donald Bradman, who amassed 974 runs at 139.14 in five Test matches against England in 1930, holds the world record for most runs in a Test series.
