IPL 2023: Umesh Yadav becomes bowler with most wickets against single opponent in tournament's history

During the second game of the Indian Premier League 2023 between Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, Umesh Yadav registered his name in record books and became the player with most number of wickets against a single opponent. Umesh Yadav finished with figures of 1/27 in his four overs, and the one wicket marked his 34th wicket against Punjab Kings in the history of IPL.

After KKR put PBKS to bat first, Tim Southee drew the first blood by dismissing the opponent's opening batter Prabhsimran Singh. KKR bowlers then struggled to get the breakthrough as Bhanuka Rajapaksa and skipper Shikhar Dhawan stitched up an 86-run partnership for the second wicket.

That is when Umesh Yadav struck to get his first wicket and only wicket of the evening, and also broke the partnership to hand his side the much-needed breakthrough. Yadav sent Bhanuka Rajapaksa back to the pavilion soon after the batter notched up a half-century, as he walked back scoring 50 off 32 deliveries.

Nevertheless, combined efforts from the top and middle-order batters helped the Punjab Kings post a defendable target of 192 runs. While Prabhsimran and Dhawan scored 23 and 40 runs respectively, Jitesh Sharma and IPL debutant Sikander Raza notched up 21 and 16 runs apiece. The most costliest player in the history of IPL- Sam Curran remained unbeaten scoring 26 off 17 deliveries while Shahrukh Khan scored 11* off 7.

Picking up one wicket in his stipulated four overs' spell, Umesh Yadav jumped on top of the list of players with most wickets against one single opponent in the history of the league. He surpassed Dwayne Bravo and Sunil Narine's joint record of 33 wickets against Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings respectively. Former Sri Lankan great Lasith Malinga has the third most number of wickets against one opponent with his 31 against Chennai Super Kings.
