The 16th edition of the Indian Premier League is all set to begin on Friday, March 31 with defending champions Gujarat Titans taking on Chennai Super Kings in the opening match at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Having rebuilt their squad, the MS Dhoni-led side will aim for a win, especially after finishing ninth last year, while Gujarat will hope to win their first home game in order to keep the momentum going from last year.

Meanwhile, the new season will also see the return of Ben Stokes and Sam Curran, who missed last year’s IPL because of their respective injuries. This year, many franchises showed interest in order to sign these two English cricketers, as Sam Curran eventually emerged as the costliest player in the history of the competition. Punjab Kings signed the youngster for INR 18.50 crore while Stokes was sold to Chennai Super Kings for INR 16.25 crore.

The tournament will also see multiple new captains this year. Notably, Sunrisers Hyderabad decided to let go of their skipper Kane Williamson and announced Aiden Markram as the new leader of the pack, after the South Africa international managed to win the inaugural edition of the SA20 league. On the other hand, KKR named Nitish Rana as their stand-in captain due to the absence of injured Shreyas Iyer, while Delhi Capitals have appointed David Warner for the role as regular skipper Rishabh Pant will miss the season after suffering multiple injuries following a horrific car accident last year.

The list goes on as Shikhar Dhawan will be at the helm of things at Punjab Kings after the franchise released Mayank Agarwal ahead of the IPL auction. He led Sunrisers Hyderabad in the past but this time, the challenge will be different since Punjab Kings have not managed to qualify for the playoffs in the last eight years.
