After being invited to bat first, the South African stalwart lapped Gerald Coetzee for a six over short fine leg in the second over. With this hit, he equalled the legendary Yuvraj Singh's tally of 149 IPL maximums. The veteran went on to reach the milestone of 150 IPL sixes when he once again dispatched Coetzee for a six over mid-off in the fifth over.

Faf du Plessis notches up first half-century in IPL 2024

Du Plessis, who represented Rising Pune Supergiants and Chennai Super Kings in the past, came into the encounter on the back of some dismal scores. He had only 109 runs under his belt from the first five matches. However, on a ground where he scored two fifties in his last three innings, the 39-year-old turned up the heat and formed an excellent 82-run partnership off 47 balls with Rajat Patidar.

Du Plessis was eventually dismissed in the 17th over by Jasprit Bumrah. The former had scored 61 off 40 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes. This turned out to be his first half-century in the 17th edition of the cash-rich league.

The former Proteas captain's partnership with Patidar came at a critical juncture after RCB lost the wickets of Virat Kohli and Will Jacks inside the first four overs. The Royal Challengers have come into this encounter on the back of three consecutive losses and are languishing at No. 9 on the table with a solitary win from five games. They will be desperate to get back to winning ways.
