Sunrisers Hyderabad faced table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League 2024. Skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first in the hope of posting a big total on the scoreboard. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer was happy with bowling first as he wanted to chase down the total set by the opposition. Both the teams decided not to make any changes to their playing XI.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: 62/4 after 8 overs - First Strategic Time Out
However, the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad would not be happy with the poor start that they got during the powerplay. It all started when Mitchell Starc dismissed fellow countryman Travis Head on the second delivery of the first over. In the second over, Vaibhav Arora sent back the dangerous Abhishek Sharma as the batter tried to clear the in-field but found the fielder at cover.
Rahul Tripathi came out and played with aggressive intent which brought a few runs for the side. During the third over, he was caught by a stunning yorker from Starc but the umpire gave it not-out and Shreyas Iyer decided not to review it. Later the visuals showed that Tripathi would have had to depart if the team had decided to go for the review.
But Mitchell Starc decided to deal blows differently as he sent back K Nitish Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed on consecutive deliveries to worsen the situation even further for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. Heinrich Klaasen joined Rahul Tripathi at the crease to stabilize the innings for the side and take the team to a respectable position.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: 115/5 after 13 overs - Second Strategic Time Out
The duo of Heinrich Klaasen and Rahul Tripathi were able to give the team some momentum after the poor start as they grabbed boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking. They had a great 62-run stand with Klaasen being the more aggressive batter of the two. Tripathi on the other end was happy to rotate strike and get boundaries whenever he received a loose delivery or two.
Both of the batters were able to handle the West Indies all-rounders Andre Russell and Sunil Narine as they got a flurry of boundaries during their overs. However, Varun Chakravarthy came for his first over and dismissed the South African wicket-keeper batter Heinrich Klaasen.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: 159 - All Out after 20 overs
Abdul Samad came to the crease to support Tripathi, who seemed to be the lone warrior for the Hyderabad franchise today. A mix-up between the two batters saw Tripathi being dismissed. Sunrisers Hyderabad found themselves in a poor position as they lost impact player Sanvir Singh on his first delivery.
After that, Samad was quick to give away his wicket easily despite five overs still left to play in the innings. Bhuvneshwar Kumar also couldn’t stay at the crease for long as he was removed by Varun Chakravarthy in the 16th over. Pat Cummins played a few shots and scored 30 runs off 24 balls but was removed in the last over by Andre Russell.
