In a humdinger of a contest at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala during Match 58 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, it was eventually the might of the Mumbai Indians (MI) that reigned supreme against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday, May 14, to clinch a victory in the last-over thriller, with Tilak Varma being the star of the night for his unbeaten 75 off 33 in the terrific run chase.
Mumbai successfully chased down the 201-run target at the Dharamshala deck, which proved to be of dual nature, with runs coming in phases across both innings. PBKS started off with a brilliant knock by Prabhsimran Singh (57 off 32). The middle order failed, courtesy of a brilliant spell by Shardul Thakur (4-39), who accounted for the wickets of Shreyas Iyer (4 off 2), Prabhsimran, and Suryansh Shedge (8 off 5).
Late blows from Xavier Bartlett, Vishnu Vinod and Azmatullah Omarzai ensured that PBKS touched the 200-run mark at the end of the innings, setting a decent total for the visiting side, led by Jasprit Bumrah. Mumbai's response was evident in their hard-hitting approach, with Rohit Sharma (25 off 26) and Ryan Rickelton giving the perfect start in the power play.
As Rickelton departed, Naman Dhir followed suit. Rohit was outfoxed by Yuzvendra Chahal's terrific turner in the tenth over that derailed the innings further. A run-a-ball outing for Sherfane Rutherford (20 off 21) came to an end, but Tilak Varma stood tall between Punjab's unit and the win. Smashing six fours and as many sixes, Tilak outclassed Shreyas Iyer's bowlers, taking them to the cleaners.
Only 15 runs were needed in the last over, and Will Jacks hit a six off the first to put the pressure back on Punjab. As Tilak got strike a couple of balls later, he smashed a six over the long-off region to dent things further for Punjab. With two needed off the last couple of deliveries, Tilak once again shuffled across and smashed a boundary to seal the deal as MI clinched a six-wicket win.
