Steve Smith and Co. staged a huge comeback in the second ODI defeating India by 10 wickets in Visakhapatnam on March 19. Mitchell Starc’s five-wicket haul helped Australia to restrict India to a below-par 117 in just 26 overs. The victory meant that now the Aussies are levelled (1-1) with India in the ongoing three-match ODI series.
Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar was not pleased with the Rohit Sharma-led team’s performance in the second ODI. While speaking with Star Sports, Gavaskar was asked about his thoughts on the former captain Virat Kohli’s dismissal. He reckoned that Kohli’s overconfidence might have contributed to his dismissal. Notably, Kohli top-scored with 31 runs off 35 balls, before being dismissed by Nathan Ellis.
"It could be a lapse in concentration and it could be a little overconfidence as well because Nathan Ellis came as the fifth (actually fourth) bowler,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
Gavaskar also feels that the star India batter might have taken it easy against Ellis after successfully negotiating the spells of Starc.
"When you have faced the main bowlers successfully and don't get out to them, your confidence also increases slightly. You will also have to say that if the ball had hit the outside part of his pad, he would have been not out, but because it hit him on the inside part of the pad, he was out,” the 73-year-old said.
‘I feel Virat Kohli premeditated a little' - Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar opined on Kohli's batting
Former cricketer and current Royal Challengers Bangalore head coach Sanjay Bangar opined that he might have premeditated a little. The 50-year-old also said that he feels the batter was looking for a shorter length and not a full delivery.
"I feel he premeditated a little. These days, because Test cricket, ODIs and T20Is are happening in parallel, the batters get into the habit of premeditating a lot. It comes inherently. I feel he was looking for a shorter length on that delivery. He was not expecting a full delivery,” Bangar said.
"He had probably made up his mind beforehand itself that it would be short and he would tap it towards the leg side and take a run and he made a mistake in that. So it is better if you don't premeditate in such conditions. A neutral mindset is the best mindset," the 50-year-old concluded.
