'It is a challenging period for a youngster when you know you are next in line' – Ajinkya Rahane on Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of IND vs WI ODIs

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been recalled to India's ODI squad for the three-match series against the West Indies, which begins on September 27, 2026, at Thiruvananthapuram. The 24-year-old left-hander was included in the squad announced on September 16 after missing the recent England series. Jaiswal's return comes on the back of a strong domestic record and his most recent ODI appearance on June 20, 2026, against Afghanistan, where he scored an unbeaten 110 off 86 balls in Chennai.

Ajinkya Rahane has offered insight into the mental challenges that young players like Jaiswal face when they are part of the squad but waiting for their opportunity in the playing XI. Rahane spoke about the pressures and self-doubt that can emerge during such periods, emphasising the importance of maintaining focus and preparation.

"It is a challenging period for a youngster when you know you are next in line. Questions like when you will get the next chance, when you will do well, and when you will get consistent chances will come in your mind. As a player, you need to focus on what is in your hands. If you are with the team and sitting out, look at how you can improve and how you can be prepared. If Jaiswal is not getting chances, it is important for him to uplift his game even from the outside," Rahane said in a video on his Hindi YouTube channel.

Jaiswal's challenge as backup opener

Jaiswal currently operates as a backup opener in India's ODI setup, with captain Shubman Gill and veteran Rohit Sharma holding the primary opening positions. The young batter has made a strong impression in his limited ODI opportunities since his debut on February 6, 2025, against England. In six ODI appearances, Jaiswal has accumulated 285 runs at an average of 71.25, including two centuries that underline his potential at the international level.
