The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squads for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka on Tuesday (December 27) with some big changes. Indian captain Rohit Sharma returns after missing out on the last ODI and two-match Test series due to a minor finger injury against Bangladesh in recent series. But Rohit, along with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, is restricted for only ODIs against Sri Lanka.

The star trio is missing the T20I squad for Sri Lanka and this raises a big question on India's planning for the next T20 World Cup in 2024. Rohit is expected to be missing the squad due to his recent finger injury and is yet to recover completely. But there is no official comment on Rahul and Kohli's absence from the T20I team.

Their absence has led to fans speculating that both players will not be in management's plans for the next T20 World Cup. The former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir also believes that the management is moving on from Kohli and Rahul for the 2024 World Cup preparation and admits that it will be tough for both of them to be in plans for the next T20 World Cup.

"There should be good communication between the selectors and these players. If the selectors have decided to look beyond these guys, so be it. I think a lot of countries have done that," Gambhir told ESPNCricinfo on Thursday.

"Personally, if you ask me, it looks tough. People like Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan should all be in the mix. Hardik Pandya is there, I'd like to try to get guys like Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi, and Sanju Samson into the mix. They can play fearless cricket," Gambhir added.

Next generation of cricketers adopt aggressive approach

Gambhir also added that the new generation of cricketers might adopt aggressive cricket in T20Is which everyone is demanding after India's exit from the T20 World Cup 2022. He pointed out that if youngsters impress in the given opportunities then it will be difficult for Virat and Rahul to be part of the next World Cup in 2024.

"Probably the new generation of cricketers might be able to achieve that template and play the T20 cricket everyone wants India to play. So I feel, if these guys continue to do well in the opportunities they get, it will be difficult for the rest of the guys who have been rested or probably been dropped," Gambhir added.
