Joe Root can overtake Sachin Tendulkar's record in Test cricket: Michael Vaughan

Former England cricketer Michael Vaughan has backed star batter Joe Root to break the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in the history of Test cricket. Joe Root recently racked up his 32nd Test century playing against the West Indies at Trent Bridge.

During his excellent knock, Root went past Shivnarine Chanderpaul to become the eighth-highest run-getter in Test format. It is worth noting that with 142 Tests played, Joe Root has scored 11,940 runs to his name. Furthermore, Sachin Tendulkar has played exactly 200 Tests in his career, where he scored 15,921 runs.

With Root edging ever closer to Tendulkar’s record, Michel Vaughan backed Root to break the longstanding record.

“Joe Root will become England’s leading run-scorer in the next few months and is so special that he really could overtake Sachin Tendulkar eventually. With the bat, generally, they did not look reckless like they had in the past. They are scoring quickly, but it doesn’t look like their egos are taking over. They are just playing with good sense,” Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

“As the rock, Root is obviously key to that, and I love that he kept the reverse-scoop in the locker until he was past 100 and England’s lead was massive,” Vaughan added.

It is also interesting to note that Joe Root is chasing the records held by former England batter Alastair Cook. Root is nearing Cook’s record for most Test hundreds by an England batter (33). He is also 532 runs short of overtaking Cook as the leading Test run-scorer for the national team.

Recently, England defeated the West Indies in the second Test. After having won the first Test, England managed to defeat the visitors by 241 runs in the second Test and clinch the three-game series. The Three Lions have notably taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the ongoing series.

The third and final Test will begin on July 26, and is scheduled to be played at the Edgbaston, Birmingham.
