Justin Langer nullifies reports of offer as England Test coach

Former Australia head coach Justin Langer has confirmed that he has not been contacted regarding the vacant head coach role of England men's Test team after Brendon McCullum departed from the position earlier in July.

Langer was earlier considered one of the front-runners for the role alongside former England coach Andy Flower, the latter of whom came out and confirmed himself as out of the running for a sensational return. Now, Langer has come out to deny the allegations, stating that he has not been contacted regarding the job.

"No, I haven't, no, I haven't heard from anyone. You read all this, it's all paper talk, it's all rumours," Langer said on the Stick to Cricket podcast.

Langer elaborated on the allure of the English coaching role, grouping it alongside India and Australia as among the more lucrative opportunities. He expressed that it would make him ponder if he was ever considered for the role.

"There's three coaching roles in the world as a coach - the Australia head coach, the Indian head coach, and the England head coach. But it's all hypothetical, isn't it? When it comes to coaching, it's a career, and everyone looks at all opportunities, don't they?" the former Australian batter added.

On being asked who he had in mind as a potential contender, Langer refused to single out particular candidates but stated that whoever takes the role would require a good rapport with McCullum, who is still coach of the white-ball teams. As earlier reported by multiple local outlets, contenders for the role include Stephen Fleming, Richard Dawson, Jonathan Trott and Tom Moody, along with the possibility of Marcus Trescothick taking over on an interim basis for the Pakistan series set to commence on August 16.

"I've got no idea. They're going to have to work really well with Baz, and they've got to be really clear in their vision. Great leaders, you've got to be really clear in your vision, what you stand for, and then you go forward from there," Langer added.

Langer is currently coaching the Manchester Super Giants in the 2026 Men's Hundred and has overseen a solid start, picking up two wins in three matches.
