Kieron Pollard has communicated to Joburg Super Kings management that he will not be available for the SA20 2027 season. The Trinidadian cricketer made this decision known shortly after being formally appointed head coach of Mumbai Indians. Joburg Super Kings is a South African subsidiary of Chennai Super Kings, creating a situation where Pollard's unavailability could have triggered complications across the interconnected ownership structure. Interestingly, MI Cape Town, the Mumbai Indians-owned franchise in the ILT20, had chosen not to bid for Pollard at the SA20 auction.
Kasi Viswanathan, Chief Executive Officer of Chennai Super Kings and all Super Kings franchises, confirmed the development. He stated that Pollard had conveyed his inability to participate in the upcoming campaign and that the franchise would now seek a replacement player for the January 17 to February 21 season.
“He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings. We will now look for a replacement," confirmed Kasi Viswanathan, CEO of CSK and all Super Kings franchises, as per Cricbuzz.
MI management made clear that no pressure had been applied to Pollard regarding his decision.
"It’s up to KP on the matter. We have given no instructions," an MI source told before the news of Pollard communication emerged.
Why did Pollard withdraw from Joburg Super Kings?
Pollard's unavailability is particularly notable given that Joburg Super Kings had purchased him for R1.5 million at the SA20 auction held in early October. At that same auction, MI Cape Town acquired Shimron Hetmyer for the identical amount instead of pursuing Pollard. The franchise explained its reasoning for this choice, noting that both players occupy similar roles in the middle order and that auction dynamics had influenced the decision.
"It all depended on the auction order. Both Hetmyer and KP perform the same role in the middle order. Hetmyer’s name came up first, and we could not have waited for Pollard. What was the guarantee that no other team would compete with us and we would get him at the auction?" an MI source explained, referring to the franchise’s decision not to bid for Pollard at the SA20 auction.
Pollard's career across Mumbai Indians-owned franchises spans multiple global leagues. From 2024 to 2026, he featured in 12 matches for MI Cape Town, 30 matches for MI New York, and 25 matches for MI Emirates in the ILT20. Beyond MI-owned teams, Pollard continues to play for Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League, a competition where Mumbai Indians has no presence. He also serves as head coach of MI London in The Hundred. Pollard's long association with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League remains significant in his career history. He joined the franchise in 2010 and featured across 13 seasons until 2022, playing a role in all five of Mumbai Indians' IPL title victories.
