Lancashire have been handed over a penalty of six points from their County Championship tally after a hearing by a Cricket Disciplinary Committee came to the fore. Lancashire, who already were down with five penalties (fixed) between September 2020 and September 2021, got suspended points penalty given they didn’t grab two more such points in the 1-year period.

However, as things stand now, the club racked up two separate penalties (level one) during their games against Warwickshire and Northamptonshire this season. Due their latest actions, they are now bearing the brunt of points deduction from the overall tally. Talking about the event, the director of Lancashire Cricket Mark Chilton called the deduction of points as ‘heart-wrenching.’ He also termed both the received fixed penalties as harsh punishment.

Both fixed penalties we received were unduly harsh punishments: Lancashire Cricket Director Mark Chilton

“Following all our hard work throughout the winter and in the County Championship this season, to be deducted points for what are, in our opinion, minor indiscretions is gut-wrenching. With our suspended sentence from previous indiscretions, we knew the position we were in at the start of the season, addressed this as a group and set our expectations of one another,” said Lancashire Cricket Director Mark Chilton as quote by club’s official website.

“In our opinion, both fixed penalties we received were unduly harsh punishments, which could have gone either way, and it is this inconsistency in the decision-making that makes this difficult to take,” he added.

Lancashire now stand at third slot in the Division One points table but have a huge difference of 35 points with the table toppers Hampshire. Talking about the season, they have only one game left against the second slotted Surrey and have no rights of challenging the above-mentioned sanction, docking them points.
