Laurie Evans has signed a one-year deal with Essex for next summer's T20 Blast, the county confirmed on October 22, 2026. The right-handed batter, who turns 40 next year, joins from Surrey after spending seven of the last several seasons at The Oval across two spells.

Evans represented Surrey 107 times in total, covering stints from 2009-2010 and again from 2020-2026. During his second and longer spell he accumulated 2,208 runs from 96 T20 appearances for the county and was awarded the Surrey County Cap in 2025. His career-best T20 score of 118* came from 60 balls against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens in 2023. Despite that record, the 2026 domestic summer was a difficult one for Evans. Across 26 innings spanning the T20 Blast, the Hundred and the European T20 Premier League, his top score was just 40.

"During the summer I came to the realisation that it was the right time for me to move on - both personally and for the club. I felt I needed a new challenge and that the club needed some new energy. I'd like to thank everybody at Surrey for all they have given me in my career, from when I joined the club as a boy to leaving now," Evans said, as quoted by Cricinfo.

What does Evans bring to Essex?

Evans arrives at Chelmsford with a broad portfolio of T20 experience accumulated across multiple competitions and countries. He made his breakthrough at Warwickshire before joining Sussex ahead of the 2017 season, and he played a match-winning hand in the 2021-22 Big Bash final for Perth Scorchers.

His new contract at Essex also includes an option to play in the County Championship, though Evans has not played a first-class match since 2021. Essex have not specified whether that red-ball option is likely to be activated. Evans was also named in a 55-man England training squad during the Covid pandemic, though he never won an international cap.

Essex's signing comes at a point when the county are looking to strengthen their batting resources. Jordan Cox is likely to be absent from Essex's T20 Blast squad next summer because of England's Test commitments for the Ashes. Essex also permanently signed George Bell from Lancashire following a successful loan spell, meaning Evans joins a squad that is being reshaped ahead of the new campaign.

What is Essex's recent T20 Blast record?

Essex made it out of the group stage of the T20 Blast for the first time in three seasons in 2026, which represented a step forward for the county. However, they were beaten heavily by Hampshire in the quarter-finals and will be looking to go further in 2027. The club expressed clear enthusiasm about Evans's arrival.

"We are all delighted to welcome Laurie to the squad, and we hope our supporters are just as excited about his arrival. Laurie has been part of successful teams around the world, bringing an exciting, attacking brand of cricket alongside a wealth of experience that will be a real asset to the club," Chris Silverwood, Essex's director of cricket and head coach, said.

Evans also had a doping-related matter in his recent past. He tested positive for a banned substance in 2022, denied any wrongdoing, and his provisional suspension was lifted in 2023. That episode did not prevent him from continuing to play county and franchise cricket in the seasons that followed.
