MCC announce addition of Jhulan Goswami, Heather Knight, Eoin Morgan to coveted World Cricket Committee

The renowned Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) announced the latest additions to the World Cricket Committee (WCC) which is an independent body comprised of current and former international cricketers, officials, and umpires from around the globe. Legendary cricketers Jhulan Goswami, Heather Knight and Eoin Morgan have joined the WCC ahead of the committee’s meeting at Lord’s on Monday, June 26.

Goswami is a former India cricketer who bid adieu to the game in 2022 during an ODI against England at Lord’s. The legendary seamer is the leading wicket-taker in Women’s ODIs with 255 scalps to her name from 204 matches at an average of 22.04 and an economy of 3.37. Goswami also has the most number of scalps in the Women’s World Cup to her name i.e. 43 from 34 matches. The Bengal-born cricketer was hailed as one of the fastest bowlers in the women’s game and was made an Honorary Life Member of MCC in April earlier in 2023.

Speaking of another legend in women's cricket, England skipper, Heather Knight, has been captaining England since 2016 and led her team to ICC Women’s World Cup triumph in 2017 at Lord’s by defeating India in the final. She has played 129 ODIs and 98 T20Is for her side and scored 3589 and 1583 runs respectively. The England women’s skipper has also captained Lord’s-based Hundred team London Spirit since the beginning of the competition and will be once again seen leading the side this year for the third straight season.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the MCC's World Cricket Committee, Mike Gatting, welcomed the three legendary figures ahead of their scheduled meeting at the Lord's.  Citing their vast experience in the game, Gatting believes that these champions will share their valuable inputs which will benefit the top cricket body. Furthermore, stressing the importance of women in the committee, Gatting lauded their presence in the game which has impacted the growth of the game on a positive note while they served their country over the years. 

“We are thrilled to welcome Jhulan, Heather and Eoin to the World Cricket Committee. These are three players who have excelled at the very top of the international game and their knowledge of how the elite level of cricket works will be an advantage to the committee," the former England captain stated.

“It is also important that we are growing the female representation on the committee with the growth that women’s cricket has enjoyed in recent years. Jhulan and Heather join Clare Connor and Suzie Bates who can all offer first-hand insight into the women’s game," Gatting concluded.

Eoin Morgan led England to their inaugural World Cup title

On the other hand, Eoin Morgan is the leading run-scorer for England in ODIs with 7701 runs to his name in 248 matches at an average of 39.29 and a strike rate of 91.16. The former England captain is also the second-highest run scorer for his side in T20Is with 2458 runs to his name. Morgan etched his name in history books when he led England to their maiden ICC Cricket World Cup title in 2019 by defeating New Zealand in the final.

He represented Middlesex for 17 years and has also captained London Spirit in The Hundred. The former England skipper was made an Honorary Life Member of MCC earlier this year. Earlier in 2022, three further new members were added to the WCC in February, when Clare Connor, Justin Langer and Graeme Smith joined ahead of the meeting in Dubai.
