Shreyas Iyer’s back injury has put team India in trouble as the management now looks for like-for-like options in the ODI format. Iyer suffered an injury to his back during the fourth Test against Australia, and with the all-important ODI World Cup and the World Test Championship Final approaching, India will need his services to bolster their middle order.

The Indian Premier League is set to begin next week from March 31, and Iyer’s participation in the cash-rich event is also unlikely as the Kolkata Knight Riders will be looking for someone to lead the side. But as per reports, it is said that Shreyas Iyer has not yet taken a call on his surgery that has been recommended by the experts at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

Even batsmen are having back surgeries?: Ajay Jadeja

If Iyer opts for the surgery, it will keep him out of action for an extended period as after the procedure, he will have to undergo rehab for a minimum of three months. Ajay Jadeja, former India all-rounder, while reflecting on the news of Iyer's injury, said that he was bewildered to see current batters experiencing back problems, which wasn't the situation during his playing days.

“For three months? This is also something new I am hearing. Injuries happen all the time but back surgery for a batter? This is something I have never heard before. Even batsmen are having back surgeries? Yeh toh khel se ird gird ko cheezein judi huyi hai uspe thoda dhyaan dena padega. Yeh jo loha utha raha hai, faeda toh ho raha hai uska (This is all because of the things happening in and around the game. Weightlifting has its advantages), but we get to see the other side as well. Hope he gets well,” Jadeja said while speaking to Cricbuzz.

Though Iyer is most likely to miss the entirety of the IPL 2023, the KKR management is expected to share an official update soon, and also name the replacement captain for the 16th edition of the tournament.
