Even though Suryakumar Yadav has been a force to reckon with in the shortest format of the game, he has been very poor in ODIs. He has played 26 matches in the 50-overs format and has managed to score only 511 runs in the process. Despite so, the team management has shown a lot of faith in him, giving him an opportunity in the upcoming Asia Cup.
Meanwhile, talking about the flamboyant batter, former cricketer Wasim Jaffer mentioned that Suryakumar Yadav should play at number six in ODI cricket in order to play his best brand of cricket. He added that the 32-year-old loves to play an aggressive brand of cricket but hasn’t been given the same role in ODI cricket and hence, he has failed to succeed. Thus, Jaffer believes that the team management should try Suryakumar at number six.
“Suryakumar Yadav has the game to succeed in ODI cricket. He has played under my captaincy and has made his debut in front of me. He has the talent. He started at number four in the Ranji Trophy. So, he is used to that number, even though his game since then has completely changed but he has always been a dynamic player. I think he is just finding it difficult in the transition from T20 cricket to ODI cricket," the former Indian opener stated.
“In ODI cricket, you need to have different skill set. He needs to work on that. I think number six is probably a good position for him in 50 overs. At number six, he can play the kind of cricket, he wants to play. Like a finisher,” Jaffer mentioned while talking to Sports Launchpad.
Indian team management may try Suryakumar at number four slot
Notably, it would be difficult for Suryakumar Yadav to break into the team at number six as the team management might prefer Hardik Pandya for his all-round skills. All the other spots are more or less filled as the team management is likely to put their money on Shreyas Iyer at number four. In case he fails to make a mark, they might either turn to Suryakumar Yadav or Tilak Varma in the upcoming Asia Cup.
