Notts lose Verreynne to South Africa duty for final three Championship matches

Nottinghamshire will be without wicketkeeper-batsman Kyle Verreynne for their final three County Championship matches after Cricket South Africa recalled the 29-year-old for international duty. The three matches remaining for Notts are against Hampshire, Sussex and Yorkshire.

Verreynne has been a significant presence for Nottinghamshire this summer, scoring 368 runs and taking 32 catches and one stumping across 10 County Championship appearances.

Why has Verreynne been recalled at this stage of the season?

South Africa are set to host Australia in a Test series beginning October 9, which is 12 days after the County Championship season concludes. Three ODIs are also scheduled before the Test series gets under way, meaning Verreynne is required to join the South Africa setup well ahead of the first match. Verreynne, who is the Proteas' first-choice wicketkeeper in Tests, has been named in the squad for the Australia tour.

Cricket South Africa's central contracts give the national board the authority to withdraw players from county commitments when international preparation demands it. With the Test series approaching and preparatory ODIs also on the schedule, the board moved to bring Verreynne back into the national environment at this point.

How does Verreynne's absence affect Nottinghamshire's Championship position?

Nottinghamshire currently sit second in the County Championship table, four points behind Somerset and one point ahead of Warwickshire. The three remaining matches against Hampshire, Sussex and Yorkshire will determine whether Notts can close the gap on Somerset and claim the title.

"It's not ideal that we're losing Kyle at this point in the season. But we understand the decision made by Cricket South Africa. We've been very happy to have Kyle with us for most of the summer, during which his contributions have put us in a strong position as we head towards the final few matches. We hope to confirm a replacement for Kyle as soon as we're able to," said Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell, as quoted by the BBC.

Losing a wicketkeeper who has taken 32 catches and one stumping in 10 appearances this season is a notable absence behind the stumps. As of September 6, 2026, no replacement wicketkeeper for Nottinghamshire has been confirmed.
