At Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday, November 4, India secured a five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the 1st ODI, with Virat Kohli delivering a match-winning performance. Chasing a revised target of 143 in 32 overs, Kohli struck 74 off 51 balls, an aggressive innings that set the tone for India's successful chase and underscored his continued ability to deliver at the highest level.
Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja offered insight into Kohli's mindset and approach during the match. Jadeja highlighted a notable shift in how the senior batter conducts himself in the ODI format, suggesting that Kohli's willingness to play freely reflects a deeper confidence in the batters around him.
"Exceptional, we have seen Virat Kohli over the years, and it's not like we are seeing him score runs for the first time. However, you felt that he was feeling that he used to carry the entire team on his shoulders, but now these people are managing without him, so he can play freely," Jadeja said on SonyLIV.
"He expressed himself. Many times, a senior player does what the team needs and bats till the end. However, now he also has confidence in the other players. So, it was a special knock, not that the match situation was difficult, but he entertained the fans who came to watch him in Auckland," he added.
What has changed in Kohli's approach?
Kohli's 74 marked his 80th ODI fifty, a milestone that underscores his sustained excellence across formats and opponents. The knock came at a crucial juncture in India's chase, where aggressive batting helped accelerate the scoring rate and guide the team towards victory. Jadeja's observation suggested that Kohli's approach represented a departure from earlier phases of his career, when he often shouldered the bulk of the batting responsibility and felt obligated to carry the team through difficult situations.
The second ODI is scheduled to be played at the Sky Stadium in Wellington on Saturday, November 7. India will look to double their lead, but they will be wary of a strong comeback from the Kiwis.
