Bangladesh (BAN) have announced their 15-man squad for the upcoming 2023 World Cup without a familiar face - Tamim Iqbal, the country's most prolific batter. This exclusion can be attributed to Tamim's ongoing battle with a persistent back injury.
The decision to leave out Tamim raised eyebrows across the cricketing world, but the cricketer had himself cautioned the selectors about considering his back condition while finalising the squad, highlighting the seriousness of his injury.
Bangladesh may enter the 2023 World Cup as underdogs, but their ability to disrupt the tournament's favourites should not be underestimated. Their performance in one-day internationals (ODIs) in 2023 has been decent, with eight wins out of 20 matches. Prior to the Asia Cup 2023, Shakib Al Hasan was entrusted with the captaincy due to Tamim Iqbal's fitness concerns.
The change in leadership could prove advantageous for the Bangladeshi side, as Shakib is undoubtedly their best player. Renowned for leading from the front with his all-round skills, he is expected to exhibit a fighting spirit in the upcoming competition.
Bangladesh aims to capitalise on subcontinent pitches in the World Cup 2023, boasting one of the finest spin attacks. Captain Shakib will spearhead the spin-bowling unit, with support from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Nasum Ahmed. Shakib, with 308 wickets in 240 appearances, holds the record for being Bangladesh's leading ODI wicket-taker.

Bangladesh have arrived in India for the 2023 World Cup with a well-balanced squad, comprising a blend of experienced players like Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah, alongside promising talents like Tanzid Hasan, Towhid Hridoy, Shoriful Islam, and Hasan Mahmud.
However, the absence of Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh's leading ODI run-scorer, may pose a challenge. His unavailability during the Asia Cup 2023 led to experimentation with openers, which did not yield the desired results. Litton Das has returned to the squad, but the question of his opening partner remains unanswered.
Injuries could also impact Bangladesh's World Cup campaign, with pacer Ebadot Hossain ruled out due to a knee injury. Despite these challenges, Bangladesh are determined to seize this opportunity and establish themselves as a formidable competitor.
Although considered underdogs, Bangladesh have a history of causing upsets in previous World Cups, defeating India in 2007 and South Africa in 2019. They will aim to make use of the favourable conditions in India, with players like Shakib and Mustafizur Rahman, who have IPL experience in the country, playing crucial roles.
