ODI World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill down with fever, likely to miss Australia clash

The Indian cricket team finds itself in a predicament ahead of their highly anticipated World Cup opener against Australia, as Shubman Gill battles health issues that cast doubt on his participation in the crucial opening clash.

Gill, who has been a prolific force in India's ODI batting lineup, is grappling with a bout of high fever, putting his inclusion in Sunday's encounter against Australia in Chennai in jeopardy. In his absence Ishan Kishan might open the innings alongside Rohit Sharma.

However, the final verdict hinges on Gill's medical condition and the recommendations of the team's medical staff. According to an insider from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), his health woes have been a cause for concern ever since he arrived in Chennai. 

"Shubman has had a high fever since landing in Chennai. His tests are being done. He will have tests on Friday, and a call will be taken on his participation in the opening game. Let's not jump the gun. If it's a normal viral fever, he could play on antibiotics, but it's completely the medical team's call," a BCCI source said.

There are reports suggesting that the batter is being tested for dengue, a potentially severe mosquito-borne illness. In the event that these tests confirm dengue, the 24-year-old could find himself sidelined not just for the upcoming match but possibly a longer duration. Recovery from dengue is a variable process, with a typical timeframe of 7-10 days required.

The year 2023 has thus far been nothing short of a dream for the Punjab batter. The young sensation has some scintillating performances across different formats.
