Pakistan docked 11 WTC points for slow over-rate in Edgbaston Test

Pakistan have been docked 11 World Test Championship points and fined 50 per cent of their match fees after being found guilty of a slow over-rate during the third Test against England at Edgbaston, played September 9–13, 2026. The sanction was imposed by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, who ruled that Pakistan were 11 overs short of their target after all time allowances had been considered.

The penalty reduces Pakistan's WTC points tally to just 5, giving them a points percentage of 4.63. That leaves them at the bottom of the WTC standings in ninth position, below West Indies, who sit eighth with 30 points and a points percentage of 20.83.

The Edgbaston Test was the final match of a three-Test series in England, which Pakistan lost 3-0. The series defeat compounded an already difficult WTC cycle for the side, and the over-rate ruling was announced on September 14 2026, the day after the match concluded.

This is the second over-rate sanction Pakistan have received in the current WTC cycle. They were previously docked 8 WTC points for a slow over-rate during the Dhaka Test against Bangladesh in May 2026. The two deductions combined have had a severe impact on their position in the standings, stripping them of points accumulated across a difficult run of results.

Pakistan have won only 2 of their 9 Tests in the current WTC cycle, and their points percentage of 4.63 is now the lowest among all nine teams in the table. The series in England also brought considerable off-field disruption. After the loss at Lord's, seven players were sent home, including Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Agha and Imam-ul-Haq. Head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul were also removed from their roles around that time.

Pakistan had already slipped from eighth to ninth on the WTC table after losing the opening Test at Headingley. The subsequent 3-0 series defeat and the two over-rate sanctions across the cycle have further entrenched them at the foot of the standings, with their points percentage now the lowest in the competition.

Pakistan have two series remaining in the current WTC cycle. They are scheduled to host Sri Lanka in November 2026 and then face New Zealand in March 2027. Both series represent their only remaining opportunities to accumulate points before the cycle concludes.
