Former Australia ODI skipper Aaron Finch has praised his opening partner David Warner and has said that he is an ideal candidate to lead the team in the 50-over format. Finch recently played his final ODI against New Zealand, which was won by the home team easily.

Finch will continue to lead the Australian team in the 20-over format but has decided to hang his shoes in the 50-over format after suffering a long lean patch. With the ODI captaincy up for grabs, Finch wants Warner to lead the ODI team and said that players love to play under Warner's captaincy.

It must be noted that both Steve Smith and Warner had to face a ban after the infamous 2018 ball-tampering incident. While Smith was banned from captaining the national side for two years, Warner was handed with a lifetime leadership ban.

David Warner is an unbelievable tactical captain: Aaron Finch

“I think CA (Cricket Australia) are revisiting what that looks like. He’s (David Warner) someone I’ve played under a few times for Australia when he’s had the opportunity to captain, and he’s been fantastic. He’s an unbelievable tactical captain and someone who at the time the guys loved playing under," Finch said on Triple M radio.

The former skipper also emphasized the fact that he is unsure about the national board's stance on the matter, but he wants them to overturn the decision. “I’m not 100 percent sure of what CA’s position is on it. But would I like to see it overturned? (Yes) … he’s someone who, you do your time and he’s well and truly done that I think,” he added.

Finch also named Australia's Test skipper Pat Cummins to lead the Australian side in the one-day format. “I think (Smith) captained a Test match in Adelaide after Pat (Pat Cummins) was out with Covid, so I think that’s all been put to bed. I think it’s pretty hard (for a fast bowler) but if anyone can manage it, it would be Pat,” said Finch.
