Naman Dhir, the 26-year-old India batter, produced a match-winning unbeaten 42 off 15 balls in the first T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Thursday, October 22. His explosive innings featured five fours and two sixes as India successfully chased down the daunting 226-run target, reaching 230 for 6 in 19.4 overs. The four-wicket victory with two balls remaining marked India's highest successful T20I chase and gave them a 1-0 series lead.
Ravichandran Ashwin, the former India off-spinner, praised Dhir's performance highlighting the quality of his batting under pressure and the manner in which he justified his selection through his on-field display.
"What class batting it was from Naman Dhir. He is justifying his selection time and again. His track record and credentials are not really there. So there was a point. But he is really proving what the selectors may have seen in him," Ashwin said on 'Ash ki Baat'.
What impressed Ashwin most about Dhir's finishing prowess?
Dhir arrived at the crease at number 7 with India's chase slipping away, yet his aggressive yet controlled batting turned the match decisively in India's favour. His strike rate of 280 showcased his ability to find the boundary consistently while maintaining composure.
Ashwin emphasised Dhir's role as a finisher and the manner in which he constructed his innings during the chase, noting that his approach demonstrated control and technical excellence rather than relying solely on aggressive power hitting.
"Naman stamped his authority as a finisher. We have found a great player as a finisher. Whatever the selectors saw was absolutely right. There was still pressure on. But he did not use power, he relied on timing," Ashwin said.
"This happens only when someone is in control. Class written all over. For me, there is a lot of worth in him. Just a class operator," he added.
Dhir's unbeaten 42 proved decisive in India's successful chase, with Nitish Kumar Reddy remaining unbeaten on two as the team completed the victory with two balls remaining. The 26-year-old's performance demonstrated that the selectors' faith in his abilities had been vindicated through his execution under pressure in a high-stakes T20I encounter.
