The former cricketer in his two matches in the ODIs picked two scalps and collected three runs. Abdullah last featured in the Shpageeza Cricket League for his side Mis Ainak Knights while being up against Boost Defenders in 2020. During the contest, he leaked 42 runs in mere three overs at a dismal economy of 14.00, despite picking a wicket under his belt.
It is no secret that Afghanistan has been in turmoil ever since Taliban took over the nation in 2021. It is worth mentioning that during the resurgence, the Taliban fighters were accompanied by Abdullah Mazari to the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) headquarters.
However, ACB president Hamid Shinwari maintained his stance that despite Taliban’s take over, ‘there would be no threat to the game’. Notably, the national cricket team has been playing the sport regularly despite the turmoil with minimal interference by the members of the Taliban group.
The Afghan team will feature in the eagerly-anticipated 2023 ODI World Cup in India, slated to kickstart in October. The side will play their first match against Bangladesh at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamshala on October 7.
Prior to the mega ODI event, the national team will also take part in the Asia Cup 2023 which will be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The tournament will prove to be a dress rehearsal for the ODI World Cup and they will be gunning to obtain a core setup for the event in India.
