The much-awaited auction for the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League is reported to take place in the second week of February at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai. Ahead of the marquee event, approximately 1000 cricketers all over the world are reported to have registered their names to be a part of the gala tournament. However, only 100 to 120 cricketers will find a team as only five franchises will be participating in the first season.

A source tracking the development has confirmed about the same to News18 and mentioned that there’s very healthy participation from both Indian and international cricketers. Meanwhile, a lot of foreign cricketers have already posted a picture of them registering with players like Alexandra Hartley and Alyssa Healy even expressing their desire to join Royal Challengers Bangalore for the upcoming season.

“Lot of interest has been seen and as many as 1000 cricketers have signed up for the WPL auction. Very healthy participation from both Indian and international players,” the source stated.

Even though the auction is slated to take place in about a week’s time, there’s still no confirmation about the exact date of the event. However, as per a team official of a new WPL team, it is likely to happen anywhere between February 11 to February 13.

“No official communication yet but we are prepping in full swing for the February 11-February 13 window. Makes sense too because the ILT20 and SA20 will be in their final stages before that and most WPL teams, who have presence there, will find it hard to juggle the two, some even three,” said the official.

BCCI invite bids for title sponsor

With the tournament expected to begin in a little over a month’s time, BCCI has invited bids for title sponsorship for the first five editions of the tournament.

“Interested parties are requested to email the details of payment made for the purchase of the RFP to rfp@bcci.tv, as per the procedure laid down in Annexure A. It is clarified that the RFP documents shall be shared only upon the confirmation of payment of the non-refundable RFP fee,” the BCCI release on January 28 stated.
