Reports: Mohammed Shami played through ODI World Cup taking pain injections

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami was absolutely sensational for the Men in Blue in the ODI World Cup 2023. Finishing the tournament as the highest wicket-taker, Shami’s performances were key in leading India to the summit clash of the marquee event.

However, a new report has come forth that states that the 33-year-old played through the World Cup with a chronic heel issue and that he played through the tournament by taking pain injections.

“Shami has a chronic left heel issue. A lot of people don’t know that he took injections regularly during the World Cup and played the entire tournament through pain, but you must understand that as you grow older, recovery from each niggle or big injury takes that more time,” a Bengal teammate was quoted as saying by News 18.

It is worth noting that Shami sat out in the early stages of the World Cup as the Indian team opted for Shardul Thakur alongside Siraj. However, with Hardik Pandya sustaining an injury midway through the competition, Shami was eventually picked and that proved to be quite the blessing for the Men in Blue as the ace pacer’s performances led the side to the summit clash of the World Cup. 

India miss Shami’s services in South Africa Tests

The Indian team is currently in South Africa, taking on the Proteas in a two-game Test series. It was announced before the series that Shami would not be travelling with the side due to an ankle issue, and the 33-year-old’s absence has been quite the hindrance for the side. 

India lost the first Test against South Africa by an innings and 32 runs, the side was outclassed in every department by the Proteas and it was clear that the X-factor in Shami was the missing link for the visitors.
