Rohit Sharma’s Test captaincy is under threat after losing the World Test Championship Final against Australia at The Oval by 209 runs. Notably, his decision to bowl first after winning the toss completely backfired as the Pat Cummins-led side absolutely dominated the Indian side throughout the match. However, amidst concerns about his future, the 36-year-old is expected to lead the Indian Test side, which will take on West Indies in a two-match series beginning July 12.

According to a senior BCCI official, Rohit’s Test captaincy isn’t in any form of danger but the selection committee and some of the senior officials have already discussed his future since the cricketer will turn 38 by the time the next WTC cycle ends. Thus, BCCI is very much open to changing the leader if Rohit steps down or the governing body finds someone more suitable.

“These are baseless stuff that Rohit will be removed from captaincy. Yes, whether he will last the whole two-year WTC cycle is a big question as he would be nearly 38 when the third edition ends in 2025. As of now, I believe that Shiv Sunder Das and his colleagues will have to take a call after the two Tests and looking at his batting form,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

“After West Indies, we have no Tests till December-end when the team travels to South Africa. So there is enough time for selectors to deliberate and take a decision. By then the fifth selector (new chairman) will also join the panel and a decision can be taken,” the source added.

Meanwhile, Rohit was hired as the Test captain after Virat Kohli relinquished his position after the South Africa series in 2022. Since then, Rohit has done well in the longest format of the game, winning series against the likes of Australia and Sri Lanka. Overall, in seven Test matches as captain, Rohit has scored 390 runs at an average of 35.45.
