Rohit Sharma becomes fastest opener to 10,000 ODI runs, surpasses Tendulkar's 22-year record
Rohit Sharma reached the milestone in 202 innings, 12 fewer than Tendulkar needed, becoming only the fourth opener to cross 10,000 ODI runs.

Rohit Sharma etched his name into ODI history during the third match against the West Indies in New Chandigarh on October 3, 2026, claiming the record for the fastest opening batter to reach 10,000 runs in one-day internationals.
He got there in 202 innings, arriving at the landmark on the third ball of the match when he flicked Jayden Seales for two runs. The moment was understated in execution but significant in weight, as it ended a record that had stood for more than two decades.
With the milestone secured, Rohit joined an exclusive group of openers who have crossed 10,000 ODI runs. He is only the fourth batter to achieve the feat in that role, alongside Sachin Tendulkar, Chris Gayle and Sanath Jayasuriya.
What record did Rohit Sharma surpass and how long had it stood?
Tendulkar had set the previous benchmark on January 18, 2004, when he reached 10,000 ODI runs as an opener against Australia in Brisbane, doing so in 214 innings. That mark went unchallenged for 22 years before Rohit overtook it in New Chandigarh.
Rohit needed 12 fewer innings than Tendulkar to reach the same total, a margin that reflects the sustained consistency he has shown at the top of the order throughout his ODI career. The record's longevity made its eventual fall a notable moment in Indian cricket.
Tendulkar's tally of 214 innings had survived multiple generations of opening batters, including Gayle and Jayasuriya, before Rohit finally moved past it in the home series against the West Indies.

How has Rohit been performing across this West Indies series?
The record in the third ODI was not Rohit's only landmark moment in this series. Two days earlier, in the second ODI on October 1, 2026, he scored 101 runs off 75 balls, striking 10 fours and six sixes in an innings that drew wide attention.
That century also carried a separate statistical significance: it made Rohit the third Indian batter to accumulate 12,000 runs in one-day internationals, following Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to that mark.
The two milestones across consecutive matches placed Rohit at the heart of the series against the West Indies. A century in the second fixture and a record-breaking moment in the third underlined the form he has carried into the home leg of the schedule.
