The entire world, especially the Mumbai Indians fans, had been waiting for Arjun Tendulkar to make his IPL debut. After being roped in by the team in the IPL 2022 mega auction, the youngster finally found his place in the playing XI when Mumbai faced the Kolkata Knight Riders in their fourth game of the IPL 2023.
Upon his debut, Sachin Tendulkar and Arjun became the first father-son duo to have played the IPL. Former India captain Tendulkar, who is regarded as the best batter in the game's history, broke down in tears as he saw Arjun bowl his maiden IPL over. Arjun continued to be in the playing combination when Mumbai faced Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday, April 18, and luckily picked up his first IPL wicket.
While commentating on air during the SRH vs MI clash, Ian Bishop revealed a lesser-known encounter with the Master Blaster while discussing the IPL's most well-known father-son duo.
“The floor manager had a word with Sachin, I won't call out his name, the floor manager, he mentioned that he loved the fact that Arjun is now playing in the IPL. Sachin had tears in his eyes. And he said, you know when I bowled the first time in the IPL, my first over went for five. Arjun's first over went for five as well. So Sachin had that in his mind all the way through,” Bishop said while commentating.
Ravi Shastri, former India player, and former India head coach, also made an important observation regarding Tendulkar. Replying to Bishop, Shastri said:
“He will be tensed though. Every time Arjun gets the ball, Bish (Bishop) mentioned about him remembering. He will forget a few innings of his but he will not forget one over. And that he's bowled. He will remember every over,” Shastri added.
In just his second game for the five-time champions, Arjun picked up his maiden IPL wicket as he dismissed Bhuvneshwar Kumar on the penultimate delivery of the second innings to put curtains on SRH’s chase. Interestingly, a Ranji Trophy game at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium featured experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar, who famously struck out Sachin for a duck.
In the history of the Ranji Trophy, Bhuvneshwar Kumar remains to be the only bowler to have dismissed Sachin Tendulkar for a duck. The SRH fast bowler was taken out at the same location fourteen years later by Sachin's son Arjun, as the young MI pacer claimed his first IPL wicket.
