Sam Konstas recalls memorable Test debut against India, says he was ‘having a lot of fun’

Sam Konstas may still be only 20, but the Australian opener has already experienced the attention and pressure that come with playing international cricket. His Test debut against India during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy turned him into an instant talking point, particularly after he took on Jasprit Bumrah with an attacking approach.

Konstas walked out for his maiden Test appearance in Melbourne and showed little hesitation against one of the best fast bowlers in the world. He went after Bumrah and eventually scored a 65-ball 60, playing an important role in Australia’s victory in the Test.

One of the standout moments from his innings came when Konstas attempted a reverse ramp against Bumrah and sent the delivery over the boundary for six. The shot ended a remarkable sequence for the Indian pacer, who had gone 4,483 deliveries without conceding a six in Test cricket.

For Konstas, however, the moment was less about the significance of the record and more about enjoying the occasion.

“I can’t remember, but I was having a lot of fun. It was quite surreal and a lot of things happened in that moment,” Konstas told TOI while speaking about his memorable debut.

“Bumrah is the best bowler in the world, so obviously it was very challenging as well.”

The youngster's debut was also marked by an on-field exchange with Virat Kohli. The two players were involved in a shoulder-to-shoulder incident during the opening session before exchanging words.

The incident attracted plenty of attention at the time, but Konstas insisted that there was no bad blood between the two players. According to the Australian opener, the moment was simply part of the competitive nature of the game.

“He just shouldered me and then we moved on. It’s all part of the game. After the match, he wished me all the best for the future,” Konstas said.

Konstas is now looking to continue his development and is part of the Australia A side currently playing in India. While his recent form has not necessarily been reflected in his numbers, the youngster remains confident in his ability.

When asked about his current form, Konstas gave a short and rather cryptic response, suggesting that he is not concerned about his performances.

“I am in very good form, pretty much smashing them,” he said.

Having already made headlines on his Test debut, Konstas will be hoping to use his Australia A stint to build momentum and strengthen his case for another opportunity at the international level.
