India's T20 World Cup-winning star Sanju Samson has been rested for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe later this month, with the selectors opting to hand an opportunity to Punjab Kings wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh.

According to the reports, Samson's omission is not a sign that the team management has moved on from him. Instead, the decision was taken to manage his workload while also testing the bench strength during a relatively short bilateral series.

The wicketkeeper-batter, who was named the Player of the Tournament in India's triumphant T20 World Cup 2026 campaign earlier this year, is expected to remain a key part of India's plans. Reports suggest he is likely to return for the Asian Games in September.

Samson is not the only senior player to be rested. The selectors have also given a break to Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, and Arshdeep Singh after a hectic international schedule.

India's ODI series against England concludes on July 19, while the Zimbabwe T20I series begins in Harare on July 23, leaving little time for recovery. With Samson unavailable, Ishan Kishan has emerged as India's first-choice wicketkeeper for the tour.

The selection committee has traditionally used Zimbabwe tours to provide opportunities to emerging players, and this series appears to follow the same approach. Samson's absence is expected to create more opportunities for teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, while Prabhsimran Singh could also receive valuable game time after an impressive IPL season with Punjab Kings.

Meanwhile, Rinku Singh has earned a recall to the squad as India continues to strengthen their finishing options in the absence of Hardik Pandya.

"The selectors were keen to try young players and that is why you will see young pacers like Ashok Sharma, Yash Thakur and Mayank Yadav getting a chance. There is a decent pool of pacers which the selection committee wants to create. As far as Sanju’s case, he is rested like Axar and Arshdeep," a source said, according to the Indian Express.

Although the selectors have clarified that Samson has merely been rested, the decision has sparked discussions among fans, considering the 31-year-old currently features only in India's T20I setup.
