Former Pakistan international Danish Kaneria has said that stating Shakib Al Hasan is not competent enough to lead Bangladesh. His statement came after after India completely dominated the Bangla Tigers on day two of the first Test in Chattogram. Kaneria also said that stated that the players do not want to play under the all-rounder's leadership.
Kaneria expressed his desire to see Litton Das lead the side as the cricketer recently found success against the Men in Blue in the ODI series. He also pointed out Shakib’s mistakes in the first innings and reckoned that the all-rounder did not use Khaled Ahmed in a proper way.
“Yes, Ebadat Hossain had to walk off the field due to some niggle. However, Shakib Al Hasan didn't bowl him much even when he returned. He also didn't utilize Khaled Ahmed properly. His captaincy was not up to the mark. These players don't want to play under Shakib's captaincy. Litton Das could be a better choice, and we saw how he won the ODI series. There is no doubt Shakib is a big player, but he is not captaincy material,” Kaneria said while speaking on his YouTube channel.
Dinesh Kaneria questions Shakib’s inclusion in playing XI
Not just his captaincy, Kaneria was surprised to see Shakib play the first Test. Notably, the all-rounder was injured ahead of the series and as a result bowled only 12 overs in the first innings. The former cricketer also mentioned that the team could have used an extra pacer instead of playing Shakib.
“The wicket at Chattogram is different from the other Bangladeshi wickets as it offers some assistance for the fast bowlers. Shakib Al Hasan was injured and wasn't expected to bowl much. Was it necessary for him to play? They could have added an extra bowler instead,” Kaneria added.
