Mohammed Shami's potential return to the Indian cricket team has sparked discussions, with former India batter Suresh Raina backing the experienced pacer's chances of making a comeback. Following Bhuvneshwar Kumar's recall to India's T20I squad for the New Zealand tour, Raina believes Shami could also return to the national setup.
Shami has continued to feature in domestic cricket despite not representing India since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. His performances across domestic competitions have kept him in contention for an international comeback, although the selectors are yet to make an official announcement regarding his future.
Speaking at the jersey launch of the Indian Soft Ball Cricket League, Raina shared his thoughts on Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to the Indian team and whether Shami could follow suit.
Raina praised Bhuvneshwar's dedication and discipline, highlighting the hard work the experienced pacer has put into maintaining his fitness and earning another opportunity at the international level. He also expressed confidence in Shami's chances of returning to the Indian team.
"Absolutely, I think he (Mohammed Shami) has done well and played good domestic cricket too. Now it is Bhuvi’s turn, aur Shami bhi aa rahe hain pichhe pichhe, tension mat lijiye."
Raina's remarks have added to the speculation surrounding Shami's international future. However, his comments reflect his personal assessment, and there has been no official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the pacer's potential comeback.
Shami last represented India in the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March 2025. His most recent Test appearance came in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
Since his last international outing, the Bengal pacer has continued to play competitive cricket and work towards strengthening his case for a return to the national side.
Shami enjoyed an impressive domestic campaign during the 2025-26 season, claiming 37 wickets in seven Ranji Trophy matches. He also made useful contributions in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Can Mohammed Shami return before the 2027 World Cup?
With the 2027 ODI World Cup approaching, India will need to assess their pace-bowling options and identify the right combination for the tournament. Shami's experience in major ICC events could prove valuable, provided he maintains his form and meets the team's fitness requirements.
India's upcoming international assignments could offer the selectors opportunities to assess their available fast-bowling options, including experienced campaigners and younger contenders. Shami's domestic performances could strengthen his case, but his selection will ultimately depend on the team's requirements and the selectors' assessment.
For now, the Bengal pacer will need to continue delivering consistent performances and maintaining his fitness as he looks to earn another opportunity to represent India.
