Former England skipper Michael Vaughan, who was recently acquitted of racial allegations by a Cricket Discipline Commission, revealed the effect of the allegations on his better half's mental health. Vaughan was one of seven cricketers accused of racial remarks during his stint with Yorkshire cricket.
Vaughan was accused of racism by former Yorkshire cricketer Azeem Rafiq. Rafiq had stated that the former England skipper had commented, 'there's too many of you lot' to a group of players of Asian ethnicity. The ex-England cricketer revealed the toll it took on his wife even though his name was eventually cleared.
“She has struggled more than anybody I’ve seen. I’ve been around cricketers who have struggled with mental health, but never someone so close. She’s better today, but it’s going to take time. It’s going to take time for me to recover, too. I’m not asking for anyone to feel sorry for me at all. I just want people to realise that this is what you go through when you get cancelled,” Vaughan said in the Sunday Telegraph.
People on social media just will not allow you to carry on with your life while it’s over your head: Vaughan
The former England skipper reckoned that social media has got a huge influence on people these days, and he was proven guilty even before his case was heard in court. He revealed that he was a victim of the so-called ‘cancel culture’, and had to deal with accusations on social media on a daily basis.
“I can absolutely tell you that it’s real. And it comes through social media. It’s so dangerous. You used to be innocent until proven guilty. You’re now guilty until proven innocent. Your life gets completely put on hold. Whatever the accusation thrown at you, people on social media just will not allow you to carry on with your life while it’s over your head,” he added.
