India captain Rohit Sharma once again came out all guns blazing during Match 37 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 against South Africa as he ripped apart their bowling. The opening batter played a quick-fire knock of 40 (24) smashing six fours and two sixes in his innings. The Indian skipper got involved in a 62-run stand for the first wicket off 35 balls with Shubman Gill (23 off 24).

Sharma once again played some majestic strokes all around the ground bringing the crowd at the Eden Gardens on the edge of their seats. During his innings, he brought out his trademark pull shot as he dispatched Lungi Ngidi for a maximum on the fifth ball of the fifth over.

Sharma was finally dismissed courtesy of a brilliant catch by Temba Bavuma at mid-off in the sixth over. Shubman Gill (23 off 24) also failed to convert his start as he lost his stumps against a beauty from Keshav Maharaj.

Following their dismissals, Virat Kohli (101* off 121) and Shreyas Iyer (77 off 87) put on a massive 134-run stand for the third wicket to bring India into a commanding position. Suryakumar Yadav (22 off 14) and Ravindra Jadeja (29* off 15) gave the finishing touch to the innings as India finished on 326/5 in 50 overs. Kohli scored his 49th ODI hundred and levelled the record of Sachin Tendulkar for most hundreds in ODI cricket.

India won the match by 143 runs

Later in the second innings, South Africa didn’t get off to a great start as they lost their in-form opener Quinton de Kock (5 off 10) in the second over itself. Seeing the ball grip and turn in the first innings, Indian captain Rohit Sharma brought on Ravindra Jadeja in the powerplay itself as the left-arm spinner delivered by destroying the stumps of Temba Bavuma.

Mohammed Shami also continued his brilliant form by taking the big scalps of Aiden Markram (9 off 6) and Heinrich Klaasen (1 off 11) to leave South Africa reeling at 40/4 after 12.5 overs. From there on there was no recovery for the Proteas as they were bundled out for 83 in 27.1 overs and lost the match by 243 runs. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for India who picked up 5/33 in nine overs.
