Former New Zealand cricketer and commentator Simon Duoll heaped praise on Shreyas Iyer for his exceptional knock against Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 2. After being invited to bat first, India posted a mammoth 358-run target against the Kusal Mendis-led side. Later the pacers ripped out the Lankan batters to hand India a massive 302-run win which helped them to qualify for the semi-final.
Speaking about Iyer after the match, Doull stated that he is a batter who has clearness over his role. He also stated that the middle-order batter plays high-risk shots and high-risk cricket to produce an innings with the best strike rate. Notably, the 28-year-old hit 82 off just 56 deliveries, including three boundaries and six maximums.
"Shreyas Iyer has amazing clarity over his role. You are going to get some performances that are high and you are going to get some low ones. Iyer plays the high-risk shots, plays high-risk cricket because he wants to score at a high strike rate, and I think that he is quite comfortable playing that role," Doull told Cricbuzz.

The 54-year-old further praised Shubman Gill as well, stating Iyer and the opening batter have silenced their critics with their knocks in Mumbai. He added that Iyer played a remarkable innings and with his performance, India have now ticked all boxes in the ongoing tournament. Gill (92) and Virat Kohli (88) were also key contributors for India apart from Iyer as the duo produced a staggering 189-run stand for the third wicket.
"You look at what the bowlers are doing, there was never a question mark. Shubman and Shreyas were the keys today. They silenced everybody. India now have all their boxes ticked. Shreyas really played an innings of note. Now he will walk tall knowing that he has played an innings of significant contribution and so every box is ticked," the former cricketer added.
