Former India cricketer Abhishek Nayar has showered praise on rising sensation Shubman Gill for his approach against Australia in the ongoing three-match ODI series. Gill scored a 63-ball 74 runs in the first ODI in Mohali, which India won by five wickets.
Nayar stated that Gill’s versatility makes him the next big thing in world cricket. He described the young batter as 'terrific' and stated that he shows a lot of maturity in his style of play. Moreover, he also iterated the fact that he can shift gears as and when needed.
“Against the pacers, he did not get the pace that he wanted so he started to use his feet, which is why Shubman Gill is touted to be the next big thing, is because he can have these versatile games with him. He can up the ante when he wants to, he can take his time. He is just terrific and he just shows a lot of maturity,” Nayar said on Jio Cinema.
India posts 399/5 in second ODI against Australia
The second ODI between India and Australia got underway at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on September 24. After winning the toss, Australia invited India to bat first. India got off to the worst possible start as they lost opener Ruturaj Gaikwad for just eight runs.
However, Shubman Gill and no. 3 batter Shreyas Iyer spearheaded India's innings with a 150-plus run partnership for the second wicket. Gill scored 97 off 104 balls, including six boundaries and four maximums. Meanwhile, Shreyas amassed a 90-ball 105 runs with the help of 11 fours and three sixes.
The stand-in captain KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan also made significant contributions to the side, scoring 52 and 31 runs, respectively. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav's stunning knock propelled India to set a mammoth 400-run target for the tourists. He scored an unbeaten 72 from just 37 deliveries, which included six boundaries and as many sixes.
For Australia, Cameron Green picked up two wickets while Josh Hazlewood, Sean Abbott, and Adam Zampa made one scalp each.
