Sri Lanka and Pakistan are all set to kickstart their campaigns in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle, as they lock horns in a two-match Test series, scheduled to commence on Sunday, July 16. While the island nation finished fifth on the points table of the previous cycle (2021-23), the Babar Azam-led Pakistan had to remain content with the no. seven spot in the standings.
Both sides will be keen to obtain results in their favour in the upcoming Test series to kickstart their WTC campaign with a bang. The two Tests will be played at Galle International Stadium and the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, respectively.
Speaking about their head-to-head records, both sides have played 57 Tests against each other wherein Pakistan have won on 21 occasions whereas the Lankan Lions have emerged victorious 17 times and 19 matches have ended as draws. As far as the upcoming Tests are concerned, Pakistan have been bolstered by the inclusion of speed merchant Shaheen Afridi, who marks his return after a year, having played his last Test in July 2022.
Currently, on 99 Test wickets, Shaheen will look to come all guns blazing and will be raring to claim his 100th scalp in the forthcoming series. The think tank has also backed uncapped players Muhammad Huraira and Aamer Jamal to feature in the set-up.
On the other hand, Sri Lanka have named their squad for the first Test and the selection committee has included Dilshan Madushanka and also the likes of Prabath Jayasuriya, Ramesh Mendis, Kamindu Mendis, Praveen Jayawickrema, and uncapped player Lakshitha Manasinghe as part of the spin department.
