Cricket South Africa has named a 16-player squad for the three-match ODI series against Australia, with the fixtures running from September 24 to September 30, 2026. Temba Bavuma will be making his comeback to lead the side for the home assignment.

The standout selection is Gerald Coetzee's return to the 50-over format. The right-arm pacer had been absent from ODI cricket since South Africa's campaign at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, making his recall the most discussed aspect of the announcement.

The series will be spread across three venues. Kingsmead Stadium in Durban hosts the opener on September 24, Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg stages the second match on September 27 — which carries the designation of Pink Day — and NWC Oval in Potchefstroom hosts the decider on September 30.

How have South Africa performed against Australia in recent ODI cricket?

South Africa's record against Australia in ODI cricket over the past few years has been notably positive. When Australia toured South Africa in 2023, the Proteas recovered from a 2-0 deficit to claim the five-match series 3-2, which remains one of the more remarkable comebacks in recent bilateral cricket between the two sides.

The Proteas then carried that momentum into a tour of Australia in August 2025, winning a three-match ODI series 2-1 on Australian soil. Heading into this home series, South Africa will be keen to extend that run of results against the same opposition and consolidate their standing as a formidable force in the 50-over format.

What does Coetzee's recall mean for South Africa's pace attack?

Coetzee's return adds both depth and variety to an already well-stocked seam bowling group. Alongside him, the pace options in the squad include Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Lungi Ngidi and the young Kwena Maphaka, giving the selectors several combinations to consider across the three matches.

The spin department is covered by Bjorn Fortuin and Keshav Maharaj, while the batting order features experienced names such as Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and David Miller. Ryan Rickelton, Matthew Breetzke, Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs provide further batting options, with Marco Jansen offering genuine all-round value in the lower order. The breadth of the selection reflects South Africa's intent to field a balanced and competitive unit across all three formats of the series.
